MARAL (WAPITI) HUNT NEAR BAIKAL LAKE

Sika Deer
Many foreigners consider the word "Siberia" to be the synonym of the word "Russia" and
think that it's a cold, snowy and desolate area with almost no people living there.
But in fact Siberia occupies the territory from the Ural mountains in the West to the
Far-Eastern coast of Russia. Yes, the temperatures here may drop up to -50 C in
winter, as well as rise up to +40 C in summer. Besides these extremely low
temperatures are not very frequent and winter air is very dry, that's why you do not
feel the actual cold so much. Just add sunny weather here and you'll get quite a
different picture. Spring and fall, being the main hunting seasons, don't differ much
in weather of those in the Northern Europe.
The main hunting areas of Siberia are Altai, Baikal region and Yakutia. The most
beautiful pearl of Siberia and of the whole Russia is the lake Baikal. So much has
been said and written about this lake that it's almost impossible to add something
new. One can add only his personal recalls of the exciting hunting and fishing. The
main object of hunt in fall is Wapiti in rut (September-October). Just imagine the
golden sea of the Baikal taiga, clear air touched by the first morning frost, light
blue sky with beams of the rising sun and a high drawling roar of Wapiti spreading
over the knolls. Among the taiga "waves" there are small "islands" of meadows
inhabited by Roe with good trophy qualities. Numerous small rivers falling into Baikal
are rich in Grayling and Lenok.
The Siberian subspecies of the European Red Deer (Cervus elaptus xanthopus) or "Izubr",
as Russian hunters call it, inhabits vast Siberian plateaus stretching from the
Western Sayany to Sikhote Alin. This big and beautiful animal is near of kin to
another specimen of the deer family - the maral.
The main visual difference between them (in size and shape of antlers) is due to a
different habitat of wapiti inhabiting mostly thick forests. In the Western parts of
their natural areal (Krasnoyarski region, Irkutski oblast) wapiti frequently mix with
marals and often have very similar trophies.
The "pure" form of wapiti without any "mixture traits" inhabits Far East. But the real
"deer paradise" with the high density of game and ideal natural habitats is the area
around Baikal.
THE AREA HAS A UNIQUE FEATURE: local Marals do not just respond to the guide's voice
imitating Maral, but they GO TO THE HUNTER AT HIS TUBE CALL. All guides are excellent
professionals in calling Maral to a hunter. Majority of hunters takes PERFECT TROPHIES
scoring for SILVER AND GOLD MEDALS
